Stress Echo

In this method we increase the heart rate and put the heart muscle under strain to elicit its functional capacity.

This test helps in the diagnosis of Ischemic Heart Disease. We can localize the area and assess the extent of ischemia by eliciting the regional wall motion abnormality which is not present at rest.It is done in individuals who cannot tolerate exercise stress EKG testing or stress radionuclide myocardial perfusion scanning.

The drugs used to increase the heart rate for this test are dobutamine, dipyridamole and adenosine.

Stress echo is also used to determine the extent of left ventricular outflow tract(LVOT) obstruction in Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy(HOCM) while considering septal ablation. The resting LVOT gradient may increase drastically during stress and may necessitate septal ablation.
